Consumer Electronics Show 2024

The show of consumer electronics and new technologies – CES 2024 (Consumer Electronics Show) took place on January 7-12, 2024 in Las Vegas (Nevada, USA). During the fair, the following items are presented: prototypes, new products or services. The event, which has been organized annually since 1967, sets trends and defines prospects for the development of innovative technologies. During this year’s fair, attention was paid to the key role of technology in increasing security and the huge potential of artificial intelligence (AI) enabling improvements to be made via applications that will be used in various aspects of life and will optimize communication.

During the CES fair, the presentation of innovative solutions related to automotive, mobility and transport could not be missing. The directions of change in the automotive industry are currently closely related to the desire to increase the importance of electric and autonomous vehicles, which results from concern for ecology and the need to improve safety in transport. Current issues discussed and presented during the fair include the future of micromobility and the use of software-defined vehicles. The main idea with software-defined vehicles is the ability to control all parameters and functions via software. Such solutions offer a much higher level of both safety and driving comfort due to the provision of continuous updates and access to wireless services, and thus the ability to respond faster to any problems, as well as collect valuable information on individual vehicle functions. The future of assistive mobility, security systems and even the possibility of implementing flying vehicles were also discussed. Many leading automotive companies presented their achievements in vehicle production, development of communication technologies and innovative solutions for mobility.

Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC), an innovator in high-speed autonomy, announced the launch of its next-generation autonomous vehicle platform, the IAC AV-24. The presented solution is a significant step forward in the development of autonomous hardware and software technologies, by increasing the capabilities of the fastest autonomous racing cars in the world. The IAC AV-24 platform and associated simulation tools are designed to enable safe driving at speeds of 190 miles per hour (306 km/h) or more.

IAC, which has been organizing high-speed autonomous vehicle races for several years, presented a new generation autonomous racing car – IAC AV-24, the development of which required both the involvement of a team of engineers and their cooperation with leading suppliers of autonomous hardware and software. These efforts have resulted in new and improved features, including innovations that will advance the field of high-speed automation.

The fair also included the Autonomous Challenge – a night race of autonomous vehicles entitled “Racing After Dark”, which was organized on the iconic Las Vegas Motor Speedway. There was no lighting on the track during the race and the cars were marked only with LED lights. Nine teams participated in the event, including seventeen universities from around the world. The winner of this year’s race was the TUM Autonomous Motorsport team from the Technical University of Munich, defeating the Cavalier Autonomous Racing team from the University of Virginia, which took second place in the competition. During the race, the winning team’s car achieved a top speed of over 150 miles per hour, despite unfavorable weather conditions (low temperatures affecting tires, strong winds), demonstrating remarkable progress in autonomous driving technology.

Kodiak Robotics presented an autonomous truck, highlighting the possibilities of using artificial intelligence in transport and logistics. Each year, over 400,000 truck accidents occur on American highways. The use of autonomous driving technology can help improve safety because human driving can be inefficient, unpredictable or even dangerous. Thanks to autonomous transport, downtime will be reduced, which means that goods will be able to move further and faster. Autonomous trucks can operate almost 24/7, stopping only to load and unload or refuel. Greater efficiency means greater resource utilization, reduced fuel consumption, more reliable deliveries and reduced damage due to extended transit times. The use of autonomy on difficult long-haul routes may be helpful in alleviating driver shortages.

As part of CES 2024, Mercedes-Benz presented the results of its work to improve driver comfort and safety, announcing a new era of the automotive user interface – with a virtual assistant with human characteristics based on generative artificial intelligence. An innovative solution – the MBUX Virtual Assistant transforms the driver-car relationship into a natural, conversational interaction, which translates into a better experience for the vehicle user. In addition, the new type of navigation harmoniously combines route guidance with real-time driving assistance, bringing the interface to life with high-quality 3D graphics.

Mobinn, a robotics startup with roots in Hyundai Motor, has unveiled a delivery robot. The robot is equipped with rubber wheels that can smoothly overcome stairs and unevenness, while ensuring stability. It uses an environmental mapping system based on LiDAR sensors and cameras, allowing navigation at night or in unfavorable weather conditions. The robot is already being tested in Korea. Such innovations demonstrate the rapid development of autonomous delivery technologies, opening the way to efficient and sustainable urban transport.

A total of over 4,000 exhibitors from various industries participated in CES 2024, including approximately 1,400 startups, which indicates the scale of the event. Many conference sessions were also held during the fair, including meetings on diversity in the technology industry and new technologies that will improve human functioning in various aspects of life.
