The Competence Center for Autonomous and Connected Vehicles of the Motor Transport Institute (CK:PAP) is an expert institution cooperating with national and international research units.

Engaging in research and development works and monitoring projects implemented in other countries are part of the scope of activities of CK:PAP, in particular the analysis of the to apply their results in domestic conditions.

CK:PAP experts are Advisory Board members of the SAFE-UP project, which received funding from the European Union under the Horizon 2020 programme. The Advisory Board aims to provide substantive support to the project consortium and advice at various stages of solution development. 

SAFE-UP is addressing road safety challenges by identifying future safety-critical scenarios and accordingly developing tools and new technologies for both active and passive safety systems.

On May 9, 2023 project workshops took place. CK:PAP was represented by Aleksandra Rodak, MSc. Eng. The SAFE-UP consortium partner UNIFI has prepared an e-learning course for motorcyclists, the aim of which is to translate findings from motorcycle crash research to increase the safety of this group of road users. The course follows a three-part structure coherent with education theory to stimulate learning across multiple cognitive levels, from simply understanding and remembering new information, to applying it in analyzing and evaluating real crash cases and proposing safe choices and strategies to avoid similar situations in the real world. With the message that crashes are predictable, Unit 2 provides new knowledge from SAFE-UP on common crash scenarios and the associated precipitating failures committed by motorcyclists and car drivers. With permission from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia to use their existing training materials, Unit 3 adopts their see-think-do approach and material on safety strategies for riding and driving. Thanks to this procedure, the course stimulates learning for motorcyclists and car drivers (experienced and novice) to identify, anticipate and manage the dangers to themselves and others that await them on the road. After completing these units, use of a semi-interactive animation of real crashes, allows each participant to interpret a selected road situation from the perspective of another road user. This is intended to allows motorcyclists to understand the driver’s point of view and vice versa. The concept of SaferRiders (name of the course) focuses on presenting facts related to individual risks, including information about the most common causes of accidents involving motorcyclists and the circumstances of these events, as well as practice at analyzing risk scenarios, evaluating the contributing factors and imagining what they could do differently to avoid similar scenarios. The course includes also technical knowledge, e.g. the issues of  braking time and distance, tips on recommended spacing, etc. The presentation was led by Marilee Nugent, PhD (Senior researcher, Motorcycle & VRU safety and human factors, Università degli studi di Firenze, Italy).
