Moia, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, launched a pilot passenger transport programme in Hamburg on 15 July 2026 using fully electric, autonomous ID. Buzz vehicles. The service is currently available only to pre-registered city residents.

The project is being carried out under the ALIKE initiative, which is supported by public authorities and examines how autonomous vehicles can coexist with traditional public transport. Up to five ID. Buzz vehicles have been deployed at launch, with the fleet set to expand to ten vehicles. Although each vehicle’s autonomous driving system is based on Mobileye technology, every vehicle carries a trained safety operator seated behind the wheel, ready to intervene if necessary.

The service operates on a ride-pooling model already familiar from Moia’s existing offering. Passengers travelling in a similar direction share a ride, with pick-up and drop-off taking place at designated virtual stops rather than specific addresses. The operating area currently covers parts of the Winterhude, Barmbek and Wandsbek districts, with plans to expand from roughly 6 to 36 square kilometres. During the trial period, rides are free of charge and can be booked through the Moia app, with booking via the local public transport operator’s hvv switch app to follow shortly.

The launch of the service in Hamburg marks the first instance of a major European carmaker offering autonomous passenger transport on the continent. Moia CEO Sascha Meyer described the launch as an important milestone in the development of a European approach to autonomous mobility. The company has stated that fully driverless operation of ID. Buzz vehicles in Europe is not expected to be certified before 2027. In parallel, Moia is preparing to launch similar services in the United States, including partnerships with Uber and the company Beep.
