Mobileye, previously known primarily as a supplier of driver assistance systems and automated driving technology to automakers (including the VW Group, Toyota, Ford, Geely, and BMW), announced on June 16, 2026, its intention to launch its own robotaxi service in the United States, covering the entire ride-hailing operation—from technology, through the vehicle fleet, to passenger service. The decision puts the company in direct competition with some of its existing customers.

Mobileye plans to deploy approximately 100 autonomous vehicles in one of the larger US cities, with operations beginning in 2027, and ultimately aims to expand the fleet to around 17,000 vehicles within five years. The company described the new venture as a “complementary path to market” that will allow it to further demonstrate the capabilities of the Mobileye Drive platform in practice, at scale.

At the same time, the company stressed that the new initiative does not replace its existing business model. Mobileye emphasized that the project is not a substitute for its existing partnerships but an extension of them, and announced it would present additional commercial, technological, and operational details at a Capital Markets Day planned in the US before the end of 2026. To carry out the project, the company intends to cooperate with manufacturers of autonomy-ready vehicle platforms, fleet operators, vehicle integration partners, and key technology suppliers.

The announcement coincides with a major leadership change. On July 23, 2026, alongside its second-quarter financial results, Mobileye announced that its founder and CEO, Prof. Amnon Shashua, will step down once a successor is chosen. Shashua had been the company’s founder and sole CEO since its establishment in 1999, leading it through its 2014 stock market listing and its $15.3 billion acquisition by Intel in 2017. Shashua intends to focus on the company’s technology strategy and the development of humanoid robotics (Mentee Robotics), while remaining on the supervisory board as chairman.

Mobileye’s decision comes amid intensifying competition in the US robotaxi market. The company will enter into direct competition with Waymo (Alphabet), Zoox (Amazon), and Tesla’s autonomous vehicles, despite having supplied technology supporting some of these competing and partner ventures for years. One such partner is Lyft, the US ride-hailing platform that owns FreeNow (active on the Polish market) and is Uber’s main competitor. In 2025, Lyft announced plans to deploy fully autonomous robotaxis as early as 2026 in Dallas, based on Mobileye’s technology. Actual launch of the service has not yet been confirmed.

The growing list of OEM partners was further confirmed by a new agreement: on July 21, 2026, Mobileye announced it would supply Cloud-Enhanced ADAS (REM) technology for select upcoming Stellantis models, starting in 2027. Unlike the robotaxi service itself, which is for now limited to the US, this agreement could have direct relevance for Poland—Stellantis is the group that owns brands such as Opel, Fiat, Jeep, Peugeot, and Citroën, all sold on the Polish market, and one of its European plants (Opel) is located in Gliwice. Mobileye and Stellantis have not yet disclosed which specific models and markets will receive the technology first.
