DARTS-PL project reaches next stage

We are proud to announce that the DARTS-PL consortium is successfully reaching another major project milestone as it nears the completion of winter scenarios.

About DARTS-PL

The DARTS-PL project is an innovative initiative led by a consortium consisting of the Motor Transport Institute (ITS) and Warsaw University of Technology. The project aims to develop a comprehensive Polish scenario database for testing and development of automated vehicle control algorithms.

The goal is to record over 100 road infrastructure sections across Poland. Each section is captured using a suite of 19 sensors under diverse environmental conditions, with each segment recorded eight times to cover all four seasons during both day and night.

The DARTS-PL project is funded by the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) under agreement no. GOSPOSTRATEG-VIII/0001/2022.

 Field Operations Across Poland

Until now, the majority of measurements in the Mazovia region have been completed. Last week, ITS team were active on the roads of the Greater Poland (Wielkopolskie) and Łódź voivodeship, recording pre-selected road sections, including critical railway-road crossings.

This week, the team is shifting operations to the Silesia region and the Brzesko, Nowy Targ, and Tatra districts. The primary objective is to capture road sections characteristic of mountainous terrain and further railway crossings in the area. A detailed map of the recorded sections is available on the DARTS-PL project website under the MAP tab.

 Data Processing and Annotation

Once the field recordings are completed, the data undergoes verification process, including synchronization and system calibration checks. Following this, the Warsaw University of Technology team annotates key scenario frames using dedicated tools. This involves classifying registered objects into one of 9 distinct categories and labelling objects across both video and LiDAR datasets. The publication of this segment of the database is scheduled for later this year.
